Hi,
just analyzed the analog tv logfile, everything looks quite clear to me.
this device could get supported by the em28xx driver if someone could
get me a testdevice(which would be the fastest way) I could try to get
the analog part done at least (that's what I looked at). The DVB Part
shouldn't be too hard too since we can get everything from the
logfiles.
Yes, of course it is possible to get everything from the log-file and most
of the time it is faster to get "something" working than asking but, IMHO,
we should always ask the vendor (if known) first if he wants to support
Linux/OpenSource and when he is keeping silent or rejects we still can
extract it from the logs.

The qualitiy of drivers created only using logs is most likely far from
acceptable, especially when components are very complex in regards of
programming.

Just my opinion,
Patrick.

Here is the output from the terminal when I run it from there.
I can't see anything wrong. Can anyone offer advice? I had it
working in my previous installation, but I don't remember what I
did. I had to reinstall because of hard drive update. Kaffeine shows the
DVB cards when I go to DVB settings, but the DVB icon remains dim and
unusable.

I have the same installation (Kubuntu Breezy) but with an upgraded
kernel. Tried before and after upgrading kernel. No difference. Kernel
was upgraded because of ATA/IDE problems with the new S-ATA hard drive.
Only diff is now this 2.6.14.5 kernel detects my KWorld DVB-T card as a
Zarlink. DVB can be watched/recorded on the same system using Xine and Klear
and cards can be tzap'ped and szap'ped.

Here is the output from the terminal:
Any advice?

Hi Folks,

I have 2 questions; the first is from a technical standpoint and the
second (which is EXTREMELY trivial) is strictly out of curiousity:

Question 1.
# Tuner (receiver): XCEIVE XC3028
# Demodulator: ZARLINK ZL10353
....etc ....
I glanced at the Zarlink docs and didn't see anything mentioned about
analog demodulation. Is there another IC missing from this list? ...
Or stated differently - if the Zarlink IC is not performing this
function, then what is ?

Question 2.
I called Xceive again and they are still not willing to give us any
specs, it's against their policy.
Anyway I reverse engineered the Hauppauge WinTV HVR 900 which contains
an xc3028 chip to a usable state. I'm able to upload the firmware, set
coloured/monochrom TV, and tune for correct requested frequencies.
The only thing that's missing atm is channel locking (but I'm sure
I'll cover that within another hour of looking at it)
I'll commit the source I have during the next few hours.
That's unfortunate news about Xceive's unwillingness, but its certainly
excellent news on Markus' RE'ing efforts!

Anyways, when I read the first part of that message ("not willing to
give us any specs") I was a bit confused, as I was under the impression
that I had read previously that someone was getting a datasheet from
Xceive. I searched the v4l and dvb archives and found that that wasn't
the case. Nonetheless, a curiousity presented itself, and which is
perhaps best asked after unfolding the story:

a)
http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-dvb/2005-November/006494.html
.... 3 short messages in that thread from Nov, with the pertinent
details (in relation to my curiosity) summarized as following:
- Oliver asks about the Terratec device
- Steve informs its using the Xceive tuner
- Patrick suggests contacting the vendor and to also ask about info on
the tuner

b) http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-dvb/2006-January/007347.html
... pertinent details from the thread summarized as following:
- Mike and Thomas talk about the Xceive tuner
- Patrick asks if anyone has asked Xceive for info
- Markus mentions he has begun work on supporting the chip

c) http://www.spinics.net/lists/vfl/msg23140.html .... (just read this
post, not the rest of thread)
- Markus mentions that he will shortly receive the datasheet for the
device ( he was referring only to the Empia EM2880 [which, indeed,
can be inferred from the context of his message])

d) http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-dvb/2006-January/007639.html
... pertinent details from thread summarized as following:
- Oliver mentions that Terratec refused to disclose info, but provided a
contact at Xceive
- Thomas alludes to Marcus' earlier message about getting the datasheet"s"
- Mike provides clarification that Markus was referring only to the
Empia IC, and not the Xceive ... still lacking Xceive info
- Oliver asks whether we can expect anything directly from Xceive

e) http://www.spinics.net/lists/vfl/msg23601.html ... (just read this
post)
- Carsten had inquired to Markus if he had received the Xceive
datasheet, to which Markus replies that he had:
"directly called Xceive in Switzerland once, they only told me that I've
sent an email to them 2 months ago and that I should better call in
America (what I haven't done yet + I never sent that mailbefore so
someone else did that and got no response)
- he also mentions his progress with the IC

f) http://www.spinics.net/lists/vfl/msg23766.html ... which is, of
course, Markus' message I quoted above at the start of "question 2 "of
my message.

g) http://www.spinics.net/lists/vfl/msg23773.html ... Markus'
announcement regarding experimental support for the Xceive IC ....
which I include just for sake of posterity to story :)

So then, now that you've digested all that, here's the mystery/curiosity
--- Who contacted Xceive? Unless their mistaken, Xceive's repley to
Markus (where they incorrectly attribute Markus to previously contacting
them) indicates that someone did, sometime roughly back in November.
Did you Oliver? Your later message (second one mentioned in part d)
above), however, might indicate that you hadn't yet tried contacting them.

I told you it was trivial! But hey, curiousity kills this cat :)

the DVB-T part of that board?
I'm such a monkey. All that time that I spent blabbing away about
Xceive, I never once bothered to look at any info about the IC (as I,
for whatever reason, had it in my head that it was solely a tuner).
Upon taking the few seconds to click on the link
(http://www.xceive.com/technology_XC3028.htm), it is rather obvious that
analog demodulation is integrated into the XC3028.

I couldn't have taken a longer route to this personal discovery though
-- Last night I was looking at some pics from htpcnews CES coverage that
featured a forthcoming Avermedia ADD+2 type card that also uses the
Xceive (seen here: http://www.htpcnews.com/main.php?id=ces_2006_7 ) . I
noticed that (what I initially thought was) the analog demodulator in
the pic looked funny. On closer inspection, it showed it wasn't a TSOP
IC at all, but instead looked more like a crystal....but I didn't clue
into this until I visited Thomas' page again this morning and had a look
at the pcb's in his photos, and in particular the one featuring the
Xceive. Bingo, some light went on , the gerbil got back on the wheel,
and I finally thought it might be time to visit the Xceive site via the
link Thomas' provided. 5 seconds later and, well, I reaffirmed my
simian status.

nice overview :-)

Thanks, Markus.
Hi CK,
I sent Emails to a number of addresses at XCeive without any
reaction. When calling XCeive Europe, I got the info that they are
just a design center and I should contact XCeive US which I did
via email.
- Jordan Du Val, i.e. jordan at xceive.com - seems to be sales (5-Oct-2005)
- sales at xceive.com (2-Oct-2005 and 27-Oct-2005))
- info_eu at xceive.com (29-Sep-2005)
I haven't called XCeive US.
Best regards,
Carsten.
Thanks Carsten.
